 Arts Project Australia (APA) artist, Mark Smith invites you to reflect on milestones in your life (real, imagined or aspirational), to then distil into a lyric to embroider onto fabric. 

Smiths’ soft sculpture work in Intimate Imaginaries depicts times of transformation such as birth and childhood. Alongside these figurative works is his titular text piece, which announces the exhibition itself. This workshop draws on the themes and processes of Smith’s practice through an exploration of text and textiles.

Mark Smith’s practice, which spans painting, ceramics, mixed media, video and soft sculpture, is unified by an ongoing exploration of the human condition. His ceramic works examine the body’s physicality, questioning human nature through form and texture. In his soft sculptures, Smith infuses selected words with emotional resonance, creating dynamic and multi-textured pieces that act as philosophical statements. By framing his work around the complexities of human experience, Smith invites viewers to reflect on both the individual journey and shared humanity. 

Smith has worked with Arts Project Australia since 2007. His works are held in major public collections, including Monash University Museum of Art, National Gallery of Victoria and Merri-Bek Art Collection.
